Indie Trading Card Game of the Year Winners (Gold, Silver, Bronze)

The Indie Trading Card Game of the Year award is the top honor of the Indie TCG Awards because it represents the full package. Not just the best art, or the cleanest rules, or the most exciting update. This category recognizes the indie TCG that shows the strongest overall foundation for players right now, plus the strongest indicators that it can keep growing next year.

For this award, we looked at the same pillars the community evaluated across the full Awards lineup, including:

  • Game identity and consistency (theme, presentation, and cohesion)

  • Ease of learning (rule clarity, onboarding, and learning tools)

  • Gameplay depth and replayability (the “keeps you coming back” factor)

  • World building and long-term expandability (lore and setting potential)

  • Community momentum and real-world infrastructure (updates, events, and support)

  • Cross-category performance (how consistently a game performed across multiple award categories)

With that in mind, here are the official ITCG of the Year placements for 2025.

First Place (Gold): Shard Bugs

Shard Bugs wins Indie Trading Card Game of the Year because it demonstrates the strongest balance of world identity, player accessibility, and visible real-world traction. It is not just a strong concept or a promising prototype. It is a game that is actively building a lasting ecosystem.

Why Shard Bugs earned Gold

It performed across multiple categories that matter for longevity.
Shard Bugs did not rely on a single strength. It showed up repeatedly in the categories that correlate with a game becoming a sustained community, including its placement in Best Artwork and Visual Design and Crowdfunding Campaign. That combination matters because it signals both presentation quality and audience conversion.

It supports learning and retention with clear public onboarding tools.
Shard Bugs provides public “How to Play” resources, including a Learn to Play PDF and a Comprehensive Rulebook PDF, which removes friction for new players and gives experienced players a stable reference point. That is one of the clearest signs a game is designed to be taught, played, and maintained.

It pairs lore with structure, not just flavor.
Shard Bugs builds its setting around Shards, dust, and the Cosmic Avatars, which creates a framework that can reliably support expansions, factions, and long-term narrative growth. That matters because the best worlds in TCGs are not only interesting, they are expandable.

It shows active ecosystem behavior, not passive hype.
Shard Bugs demonstrates visible community-building infrastructure such as news updates, event communication, and outreach to local game stores. That type of consistent, outward-facing support is a major differentiator for indie TCGs trying to cross the gap from “cool project” to “lasting game.”

Shard Bugs takes Gold because it combines strong identity, accessible learning, scalable world building, and real-world momentum into the most complete total package of 2025.

Second Place (Silver): Echoes of Astra

Official Link: https://echoesofastra.com/

Echoes of Astra takes Silver because it is one of the most consistently excellent contenders across the entire Awards lineup. If a player asked, “Which indie TCG feels the most professionally structured and easiest to pick up right now?” Echoes of Astra would be one of the first answers.

Why Echoes of Astra earned Silver

It dominated multiple categories with top-tier consistency.
Echoes of Astra’s performance across the Awards speaks for itself. It earned top placements in categories that are often the difference between a game that looks good and a game that grows. That includes recognition for Best Artwork and Visual Design, Gameplay and Mechanics, Rulebook and Learning to Play, and Crowdfunding Campaign. That range matters because it shows excellence in both creative presentation and functional design.

It is built to be learned and played immediately.
Echoes of Astra provides an online ruleset designed to be accessible anywhere, with frequent updates, plus additional learning pathways like quick-start options and starter deck support. It also supports remote play through tools like Tabletop Simulator, which helps online communities form and stay active.

Its core gameplay pitch is clear and distinct.
Echoes of Astra positions itself as a tactical, war gaming-inspired TCG experience presented through a modern fantasy and anime-influenced lens. That clarity makes it easier for new players to understand what they are signing up for, and easier for existing players to explain it to others.

Why it placed just behind Gold

Indie TCG of the Year rewards the full package, including momentum signals that reflect the current play ecosystem and real-world presence. Echoes of Astra is exceptionally strong across design, presentation, and onboarding, and it earned Silver because it is clearly positioned to scale. Shard Bugs ultimately edged it out on total ecosystem maturity and visible “right now” traction as a continuously expanding, actively supported public-facing game environment.

Echoes of Astra earns Silver because it represents the highest standard of structured, modern indie TCG development and presentation.

Third Place (Bronze): Powerline Ultra

Official Link: https://www.powerlineultracardgame.com/

Powerline Ultra takes Bronze because it proved a key strength that many indie games struggle to sustain: durability through continued support. It is not only building a world and a ruleset, it is actively iterating on player experience, accessibility, and balance.

Why Powerline Ultra earned Bronze

It delivered the most impactful update of the year.
Powerline Ultra earned top recognition in Best Update and Expansion thanks to a major update cycle that focused on improving accessibility and expanding how players can engage with the game. Updates like this matter because they show the team is investing in the player experience beyond initial release hype.

Its world building is strong enough to be recognized on its own.
Powerline Ultra also earned Silver in World Building and Lore, and that placement makes sense when you look at how much character-driven identity is built into the setting. The world is designed to support a wide range of fighters, stages, and escalating threats, which creates long-term room for expansion without feeling directionless.

It demonstrates “grown-up TCG” thinking in competitive structure and balance.
Powerline Ultra publicly maintains competitive integrity tools such as card limitation frameworks for tournament play. That type of transparency is not common in indie projects, and it signals a game being stewarded with long-term health in mind.

Powerline Ultra earns Bronze because it combines a strong, character-forward identity with visible support and a demonstrated commitment to iteration.

Why cross-category performance matters in ITCG of the Year

ITCG of the Year is intentionally holistic. When a game places highly across multiple categories, it signals repeatable strengths rather than a single standout trait. The three winners here did not simply excel once. They showed consistent performance across the pillars that keep a TCG alive: identity, learnability, gameplay depth, world building, updates, and community momentum.

Closing

Congratulations to Shard Bugs, Echoes of Astra, and Powerline Ultra. Each of these games earned its placement by showing strength across multiple dimensions that indie TCG communities care about most.

  • Shard Bugs (Gold) leads with total-package maturity: identity, onboarding, expandable lore, and visible ecosystem momentum.

  • Echoes of Astra (Silver) sets a high bar for modern presentation, learnability, and tactical design excellence across categories.

  • Powerline Ultra (Bronze) proves durability through continued support, competitive structure, and a world built to grow.

Thank you to every creator and every community member who participated in the first Indie TCG Awards. This event exists to spotlight the developers building incredible games without massive corporate backing, and the momentum behind indie TCGs is only getting stronger.

Shoutout to every contestant featured in the Indie TCG Awards 2025
